Michael Meller and Gallagher/Meller Sport Horses are proud to be a supporter of the National Horse Show, an exciting World Cup qualifying event held this year from Oct. 27-Nov. 4 in Lexington, Kentucky. The M. Michael Meller Style of of Riding Award is presented to the rider who best demonstrates the values of horsemanship, skill and presentation in the show ring. This year, it was Molly Ashe Cawley who embodied all of those characteristics. Meller established this award in 2011 in memory of his beloved friend and an integral member of the equestrian community, Kate Nash Boone. She endured a hard-fought battle with breast cancer, and Meller was looking for a way to honor her and her passion for horses.

An accomplished hunter/jumper rider and trainer, Ashe Cawley operates her Norfield Stables based out of Newtown, Connecticut, Briarcliff Manor, New York and Wellington, Florida. Some of Ashe Cawley's career highlights include two Super League team victories in Hickstead, England in both 2007 and 2009, as well as numerous USHJA International Hunter Derby victories.

This summer, Ashe Cawley had a one-two finish in the $35,000 Great Lakes Classic CSI3* at the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival aboard D'Arnita and Cat Ballou, respectively. The talented rider then made headlines for her success at the Hampton Classic Horse Show where she won the $10,000 Palm Beach Masters Open Jumpers out of 68 entries. To kick off an incredible fall show season, Ashe Cawley topped the highly-coveted $204,000 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ New York CSI4*-W at this year's American Gold Cup.

While at the National Horse Show, Ashe Cawley continued her winning streak as she and Picobello Choppin PC had back-to-back victories, first in the $35,000 Palm Beach Masters Series International Open Jumpers Speed CSI4* and then in the Salamander Hotels & Resorts $35,000 Accumulator Class CSI4*.

"I feel extremely flattered," Ashe Cawley said upon receiving the Style of Riding Award. "Michael is always there boosting us up and cheering us on through every minute of everyday, through thick and thin, through good times and bad times, so it really means the world to me that he chose me for this award this week. I really appreciate it."

Ashe Cawley noted the importance of the award and how it gives riders the encouragement needed to persevere and ultimately benefits the sport as a whole.

"I think [the Style of Riding Award] is important for the people that it represents and for the people who are behind it and for the reason that it exists. I think there are a lot of people out there trying to do things the right way that don't often get rewarded for it in this sport. It's really refreshing to have an award out there like this one. Like Michael said, sometimes he picks the youngster who is trying to do it right, who is feeling a little bit beat up for it, and he'll choose them to give them that lift, to tell them 'C'mon, keep going. You're on the right track.' I think there's always room for those kinds of awards and I think they mean a lot to the people when they receive them."

Meller commented, "I've known [Ashe Cawley] all throughout her career. She is a fierce competitor. She is a really cool girl and tries hard, works hard and is very dedicated. She's deserving of an award like this because she emulates everything this award stands for."

M. Michael Meller Presents "Doc Spirit" Award to Devin Ryan's Eddie Blue

Washington, D.C. - Oct. 29, 2018 - M. Michael Meller of Gallagher/Meller Sport Horses was proud to present the second annual "Doc Spirit" Award during the Washington International Horse Show in Washington, D.C. to Eddie Blue, a 9-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by LL Show Jumpers LLC and shown by World Equestrian Games gold medalist Devin Ryan.

The "Doc Spirit" Award is presented annually in honor of the late Dr. John R. Steele to the horse that best exemplifies the heart and athleticism necessary to be competitive at the highest levels of show jumping. Dr. Steele, lovingly referred to by many as "Doc," passed away last year at the age of 91. He was a pioneer in top-level sport horse medicine and boasted a renowned career as an acclaimed equine veterinarian. The purpose of this award is to recognize his tireless dedication, passion and countless contributions to the sport and his love for horses.

Ryan, of Long Valley, New Jersey, was honored to find out that his partner would be receiving such a prestigious award. The pair propelled themselves onto the world-stage of show jumping after they qualified and earned themselves a spot on the American team for the 2018 FEI World Cup™ Finals in Paris, France in April. There, the talented pair executed flawless rounds and ultimately finished in second place behind teammates Beezie Madden and Breitling LS, making their World Cup Finals debut an extremely memorable one.

The pair would continue their streak of success by then earning a spot on the team for the World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Tryon, North Carolina in September, where they laid down excellent trips and ultimately had a team gold medal finish alongside teammates McLain Ward, Adrienne Sternlicht and Laura Kraut.

"A horse like this stands out among the field of a lot of horses. As a rider, you always want these horses to have a little bit of history and maybe they will go down in history," Ryan said. "He's still a young horse. Hopefully, he goes on to do a lot more, but it's nice for him at a young age to already be recognized and that he is becoming a part of history. He did the WEG team this year, so that was pretty cool. He was the youngest horse at the WEG this year. To be able to have one of those horses, it's special, and I hope I have another one."

Dr. Steele's longtime friend Missy Clark accompanied Meller during the presentation in front of a packed crowd in the Capital One Arena prior to the start of the evening's highlight class, the $135,000 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Washington, where Ryan and Eddie Blue finished in eighth place.

"Eddie Blue is an incredible horse who has showcased the talent to be world-class competitor from a very young age," expressed Meller. "This has been a truly breakout year for this combination and they have showcased their amazing partnership at the world's biggest competitions, and Eddie Blue is a horse that I know Dr. Steele would truly admire."

Meller will take center stage once again to present the M. Michael Meller Style Award at the 2018 CP National Horse Show in Lexington, Kentucky on Saturday, November 3 prior to the evening's highlight event, the $250,000 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Lexington CSI4*-W. The M. Michael Meller Style Award is presented each year to the international equestrian who exemplifies the best style of riding along with maintaining a sportsmanlike composure. Last year's winner was Laura Kraut, of Wellington, Florida.

Ocala, Fla. - March 22, 2018 - Set in north central Florida in an area known as horse country, Ocala hosted the annual Live Oak International from March 15-18. The exciting event is unique in that it brings together top-level competitors from both show jumping and driving disciplines. Gallagher/Meller Sport Horses is proud to be a supporter of the exciting World Cup-qualifying event, and presented this year's Style Award to Clementine Goutal and the Leading Rider Award to Switzerland's Beat Mandli.

The M. Michael Meller Style of of Riding Award is presented to the rider who best demonstrates the values of horsemanship, skill and presentation in the show ring. This year, it was Goutal who embodies all of those characteristics.

"I'm so honored to have won it. I have actually never won a Style Award before. I've known Michael [Meller] for a really long time and it's so nice of him to give an award like that. The whole weekend was so fun and my husband was the first person to ever win this grand prix and so it's extra meaningful for me," Goutal expressed.

The American show jumper traveled to Live Oak from Wellington, Fla., where she has been competing at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). She rode Darlon Van Groenhove in the $100,000 Longines FEI World Cup™ Grand Prix CSI3*-W to a ninth-place finish, while her sister, Brianne Goutal-Marteau, ended up in second.

Beat Mandli riding Galan S to a third place finish in the $100,000 Longines FEI World Cup™ Grand Prix CSI3*-W.

Mandli, an Olympic medallist who competes for Switzerland, said, "I wasn't planning to win the leading rider prize. I just tried to have a nice weekend and perform as well as I could. To win the leading rider prize is even nicer. I'm super happy with the horses and how the show went."

Mandli was also third in the $100,000 Longines FEI World Cup™ Grand Prix CSI3*-W aboard Galan S, so winning the Leading Rider Award was even sweeter for him.

"It was actually a big surprise for me that I was leading rider because I didn't win the class. Normally you have to win the class to really go there, but I'm super happy."

Wellington, Fla. - Mar. 5, 2018 - Top athletes from around the world visit the Winter Equestrian Festival each year to represent their countries during the famed CSIO4* Nations Cup week. One of the United States' top young athletes, Lillie Keenan, was presented the Kate Nash Boone Style Award during the $205,000 Lugano Diamonds Grand Prix CSIO4*.

The award is given to the international equestrian who exemplifies the best style of riding along with maintaining a sportsmanlike composure, while competing in the CSIO4* at WEF during Nations Cup week. Presented in memory of Kate Nash Boone, the award is a way to honor the memory of Boone's support and love of 'all things equestrian.' Michael Meller of Gallagher/Meller Show Jumpers awarded the trophy to Keenan.

Keenan represented the United States' this weekend during Nations Cup competition. Keenan is considered one of the country's most decorated young riders after having an incredibly successful junior career. She has now made her move over to international competition and trains with Cian O'Connor in Europe during the summer months. Saturday's competition marked her sixth Nations Cup appearance.

"Obviously this week is a big deal for us. Riding for your country is always extremely important to me, as I think it is for most riders. As a sportsman I think you can try as hard as you can and prepare as hard as you can but in the end you need a little bit of luck," said Keenan. "I think no matter what you can always be sportsmanlike and to receive the style award is a huge honor because I feel like even if the show doesn't go your way, you can just be really a gracious competitor and that they represent that is very meaningful. It's very exciting."

Wellington, Fla. - Feb. 9, 2018 - On Sunday, some of show jumping's most talented athletes gathered at Deeridge Farms for the $220,000 Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Wellington CSI3*-W at the Palm Beach Masters. Katherine Gallagher and M. Michael Meller of Gallagher/Meller Sport Horses were proud to support the exciting World Cup event, now in its third year of operation. This year, in addition to his sponsorship of the competition, Meller presented the M. Michael Meller Style of Riding Award to two-time Olympic gold medalist Beezie Madden of the USA.

"Beezie really can handle any aspect of the industry," said Meller. "She can manage the care of top horses, she can ride top horses and she can compete top horses. She's a real role model. The award is just fitting for her. Our industry really needs role models, and Beezie embodies what a young rider should aspire to be.

"At Gallagher/Meller Sport Horses, we believe in supporting world-class competitions that showcase the best the sport has to offer," continued Meller. "The Palm Beach Masters is a beautiful venue with incredible footing. The Jacobs are on the right path in turning a horse show back into a world-class event, and we are excited to be a part of it."

The M. Michael Meller Style of Riding Award is presented to an international equestrian who exemplifies the best style of riding, while maintaining a sportsmanlike composure. Previous winners at events in 2016 and 2017 include Beat Mändli, Conor Swail, Alison Robitaille, Charlie Jacobs, Eric Navet, Mavis Spencer, Ian Millar, Callan Solem, Heather Caristo-Williams, Laura Kraut and Catherine Tyree.

Prior to Sunday's competition, Meller presented Madden with the coveted award, which was dedicated in memory of Venezuelan show jumper Andres Rodríguez.

"The style award is always an honor for me to win because style is important to me," expressed Madden. "Good style is more effective for training the horse. They know how to react properly when you ask for something if you have a good understanding of proper basics. For the long-term career of a horse, you have to have some feeling for when to push them and when not to.

"It's so refreshing for us to go to a show and jump on good grass at a venue such as Deeridge Farms down here," continued Madden. "The Palm Beach Masters really is a special and unique experience."

"Lizzie is very talented. What the award represents - I think all of these things about her and I'm glad others see it too," said Goldstein.

Goldstein and the 12-year-old chestnut mare have been competing on the Longines Global Champions Tour and most recently took fourth place in the $220,000 Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Wellington CSI3*-W at the Palm Beach Masters on Sunday.

Wellington, Fla. - Feb. 1, 2018 - For over six years, M. Michael Meller of Gallagher/Meller Sport Horses has presented the prestigious Style of Riding Award to exemplary athletes at various competitions throughout the world. The story of this unique award began in 2011 when Meller lost his dear friend, Kate Nash Boone, to a hard-fought battle with breast cancer, and was looking for a way to honor her.

"Kate was one of my best friends when I first moved back to Rhode Island," Meller explained. "We immediately became very, very good friends and maintained our relationship for 15 years. She had a good business as the owner of an equestrian boutique and was a great sponsor.

"I thought, 'What better way to honor her than by creating a Style of Riding Award in her name?'" continued Meller. "One of my driving forces was that I would hear her name announced every year. It all started because of Kate. From there, it just organically grew to what it is now."

The award is presented to an international equestrian who demonstrates the best style of riding, while maintaining a sportsmanlike composure throughout Nations Cup week every year at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). The award began as a way to honor the memory of Boone and her support and love of all things equestrian.

In regards to the winners of this highly coveted award, Meller stated, "There are very few times when [the recipient] is the winner of the class. It's about their connection with horses. There are very few really good role models in this world, and a lot of role models don't really have the right to be role models. This industry needs role models - people who have really worked hard to do this sport."

Now, the award is presented at multiple competitions, and looking ahead, Meller hopes to establish more awards that honor the generous owners who are the backbone of equestrian sports.

"In the future, I want to start honoring the owners because without them we have no sport," said Meller. "We have allowed them to be taken for granted even though they're the most important part. It is time for that."

As the horse show season progresses, Meller will continue his unwavering support of the industry by sponsoring and presenting more awards at shows including the Live Oak International in Ocala, Florida, the American Gold Cup in North Salem, New York, the Dublin Horse Show in Ireland and the National Horse Show in Lexington, Kentucky.

Dr. Steele, lovingly referred to by many as "Doc," passed away earlier this year at the age of 91. He was a pioneer in top-level sport horse medicine and boasted a renowned career as an acclaimed equine veterinarian. The purpose of this award is to recognize his tireless dedication and countless contributions to the sport and his love for horses.

Sternlicht, of Greenwich, Connecticut, was honored to find out that her mare would be the first horse to receive such a prestigious award.

"I found out earlier today from Michael Meller, who is a great friend of mine. He has always been a huge fan of the horse and in complete awe of her as I have been," Sternlicht said of the 2008 Bavarian Warmblood by Cristallo I.

"I didn't know Dr. Steele personally, but I work very closely with Dr. Ober [U.S. Show Jumping Team Veterinarian and Dr. Steele's business partner]. I have heard the most incredible things about him as a vet, horseman and as a person in general."

"My horse, as I've spoken about her before, I cannot say enough good things about her," Sternlicht acknowledged. "I've always said she's a bit of a savant. She is a true embodiment of the sport- she's brilliant, very talented, athletic, and very well-built."

She continued, "Even Dr. Ober is always amazed by the condition of the horse, so I think she's the perfect horse to be the first recipient. I'm very grateful to have her in my life and be able to share her with my country and the people on my team."

"Peter Lutz and I always admired Cristalline, who truly showcases all of the qualities of an international horse," concluded Meller. "Through an award like this we also have to acknowledge all of the people who have maintained the bloodlines and continued to breed these incredible animals for the sport that we love."

Most recently, Meller took center stage once again to present the M. Michael Meller Style Award on Saturday, November 4, at the 2017 CP National Horse Show, prior to the evening's highlight event, the $250,000 Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Lexington CSI4*-W. It's always an honor to win the Style Award. I don't do it often, so this is a surprise. It's always an honor, particularly here at the National Horse Show."

“It’s quite a list of riders in the CSIO division and they’re all good, stylish and good sportsman,” said Millar. “To receive this award is very flattering and appreciated. It’s a great thing that Michael Meller does in recognizing that element of riding. I’m very, very honored to win it.”

On Friday, Millar piloted his longtime partner, Dixson, to a 4-fault finish in the first round and jumped clear with 1 time fault in the second round to help Team Canada secure fourth place in the $150,000 FEI Nations Cup™ CSIO4*.

“I believe that Ian is one of the world’s most talented riders,” stated Meller. “He takes the time to really develop a partnership with each of his horses. This is his first FEI week with us, and we are so excited. We hope he will be our next grand prix horse.

“It is always special to win during CSIO week,” continued Lutz. “It is a big week for the team, and I am so happy to help contribute whenever I can.”
